How Do You Get Your Local Business Recommended by ChatGPT?
If you want ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or Perplexity to recommend your business, three things need to be in place before any of them will mention you: a complete and consistent Google Business Profile, real reviews across a couple of trusted platforms, and content on your own site that answers the exact question a customer would type in. There is no dashboard where you submit your business to ChatGPT. Every mention is earned, the same way a good reputation is earned anywhere else.
I get this question a lot from clients who already rank well in Google's map pack and want to know what comes next. Fair question. More people are starting their search for a plumber, a dentist, or a roofer by asking an AI chatbot instead of typing into Google. If that chatbot has never heard of you, you are invisible to a growing slice of your market before you ever get the chance to make your case.
What AI tools actually look at
ChatGPT, Gemini, and the others do not keep their own database of local businesses. They lean on the same sources Google already trusts: your Google Business Profile, your website, and third party sites like Yelp, Trustpilot, and industry directories. When an AI model answers "who is a good roofer in San Antonio," it is pulling from that same pool of information, filtered through what is consistent and well reviewed. The work you would do for local SEO and the work you would do for AI visibility overlap almost completely.
Start with your Google Business Profile
Your profile is still the single most trusted signal out there. Categories, services, hours, photos, and posts all need to be accurate and current. If your profile says one thing and your website says another, that inconsistency tells an AI model your information cannot be trusted, and it looks elsewhere instead. This is the same groundwork I lay in week one with every client, before I touch anything else.
Keep your information consistent everywhere
Name, address, phone number, services offered. If those do not match across your website, your Facebook page, your Yelp listing, and every directory you show up in, that inconsistency reads as a red flag to any algorithm trying to decide if you are legitimate. I check this for every client before I do anything else, because it is the fastest fix with the biggest payoff.
Reviews still do the heavy lifting
AI tools weigh reviews the same way a person would. A business with fifty recent, detailed reviews reads as more credible than one with five reviews from three years ago. You do not need reviews on every platform that exists. You need a steady flow of real ones on the two or three platforms that matter most for your industry, Google chief among them.
Earn a mention, do not chase one
A write up in a local news article, a roundup on an industry blog, or a feature from a trade association carries real weight too. AI models treat that kind of third party coverage as a stamp of approval, the same way Google's own ranking systems do. You do not need a publicist for this. A short pitch to a local reporter about something newsworthy in your business, a new location, a community project, a milestone, can be enough to get picked up.
Write for the question, not the keyword
People do not type keywords into ChatGPT. They ask full questions, the way they would ask a friend, things like "who's the most reliable roofer for storm damage near me" or "which HVAC company can actually come out today for a no cool emergency." If your website only has vague service pages and no real answers to specific questions, there is nothing for an AI model to quote back to a customer. Put the real question on the page, answer it plainly in the first sentence or two, and go deeper after that. That is exactly the approach I use on every post I write for clients, this one included.
This builds on your map pack ranking, it does not replace it
I still rank businesses Top 3 on Google Maps in 90 days, or 120 in more competitive markets, guaranteed, and I keep working for free until it happens. AI visibility is not a separate project from that. It is downstream of it. A business that is well optimized for the map pack is already doing most of what it takes to show up when someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation instead.
Most SEO guys will tell you AI search is a separate problem you need extra work to solve. It is not. It is the same groundwork, pointed at a new front door.
None of this happens overnight. Most businesses that do this work consistently start showing up in AI answers within a few months, not a few days. But the businesses that ignore it are the ones that will still be arguing about whether AI search is "real" while their competitors are already getting recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pay ChatGPT or Google to feature my business in AI answers?
No. There is no ad product or submission form for this. Every mention is earned through your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your website content, the same way organic search rankings are earned.
Does AI visibility replace the need to rank in Google's map pack?
No. Ranking well in the map pack is one of the biggest inputs into whether AI tools recommend you. Think of AI visibility as a byproduct of good local SEO, not a substitute for it.
How long does it take to start showing up in AI answers?
There is no fixed timeline, but businesses that clean up their profile, build real reviews, and publish clear, answer focused content tend to see mentions begin within a few months of consistent work.
What is the single biggest thing I can fix first?
Your Google Business Profile. If your categories, hours, and services are not accurate and complete, fix that before anything else. It is free, it takes an afternoon, and it is the first place both Google and AI tools look.
