What Is a Google Business Profile and Why Does Every Business Need One?
A Google Business Profile is the free listing Google uses to show your business on Google Maps and in local search results. It is the box with your hours, phone number, photos, and reviews that pops up when someone searches for a business like yours nearby. If you have not claimed yours and filled it out, you are handing that visibility straight to a competitor who has.
I bring this up with almost every business owner I talk to, no matter the industry. Before we touch a website, before we talk about anything else, I check the Google Business Profile first. It is usually the single fastest thing to fix, and it is usually the thing doing the most damage when it is wrong.
What a Google Business Profile Actually Is
Your Google Business Profile is the teardrop pin you see on Google Maps and the information panel that shows up next to local search results. It holds your business name, address, phone number, category, hours, website link, photos, and customer reviews. It used to be called Google My Business. Google renamed it Google Business Profile in 2021, but the tool works the same way it always has.
It is completely free to create and free to manage. That surprises a lot of business owners. There is no cost to claim your profile, no cost to post updates on it, and no cost to respond to reviews. The only thing it costs is time, and most owners simply never sit down and do it right.
Why Every Local Business Needs One
Customers searching for a service near them rarely scroll past the first three results Google shows on the map, known as the map pack. If your profile is not set up, verified, and filled out completely, you are not eligible for one of those three spots, no matter how good your website is.
A complete profile does a few things a website alone cannot:
- It shows up on Google Maps, where most people are actually looking for a local business
- It gives customers your hours, phone number, and directions without them ever leaving Google
- It displays your reviews, which most people check before calling anyone
- It lets you post updates, offers, and photos directly where customers are searching
- It gives you a direct line to respond to reviews and questions, good and bad
A lot of businesses I audit have a website they are proud of and a Google Business Profile that has not been touched in years. That is backwards. Most local customers see your profile before they ever see your site.
What Happens If You Never Claim Yours
Here is the part that catches people off guard. Google will often create a profile for your business whether you ask for one or not, pulling from public records, other directories, or customer activity. That means a version of your business could already be live on Google Maps right now, and you might not be the one controlling it.
An unclaimed or neglected profile tends to have the wrong category, outdated hours, no photos, and reviews sitting there with no response from the business. Every one of those gaps sends a customer to whichever competitor's listing looks more trustworthy. I have opened profiles for new clients that had the wrong phone number listed for over a year. Nobody catches that unless they go looking.
How Your Profile Affects Whether You Show Up in the Map Pack
Google ranks map pack results using three main factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance means how well your profile matches what someone searched. Distance is exactly what it sounds like. Prominence is where a complete, active profile pulls ahead of a neglected one: how many reviews you have, how recent they are, how often you post, how complete your business information is, and how consistent your listing is with what shows up elsewhere online.
That last piece is the one most business owners ignore. A profile you set up once and never touch again slowly loses ground to a competitor's profile that gets weekly posts, fresh photos, and quick responses to every review. Google rewards activity because it signals the business is real and currently operating.
What I Do With a Client's Profile First
Google Business Profile optimization is the first thing I do for every local SEO client, in week one, before I touch anything else on the website. Categories, services, photos, posts, and Q&A all get cleaned up and filled out completely. It is the fastest lever I have to pull, and it is usually where I find the most obvious mistakes.
I guarantee Top 3 map pack placement in 90 days for most markets, or 120 days for more competitive ones like roofing or dental in a saturated area, and I keep working for free until you get there. I am upfront about which timeline applies to your market before you ever pay me anything.
If you want to see exactly what is missing or wrong on your own profile, I will record a free video audit walking through it. No cost, no obligation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Google Business Profile really free?
Yes. Creating, claiming, and managing your profile costs nothing. Google makes money elsewhere, not from this.
How long does it take to show up on Google Maps after creating a profile?
Verification can take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks depending on the method Google offers you. Once verified, it can take additional time for Google to fully index and start ranking your listing, which is part of why ongoing activity matters.
Do I still need a Google Business Profile if I already have a website?
Yes. Your website and your profile do different jobs. Your profile is what shows up on Maps and in local search before a customer ever clicks through to your site.
What is the difference between Google My Business and Google Business Profile?
Nothing beyond the name. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021. If you set up a listing under the old name, it is the same profile today.
Most SEO guys hide behind reports and excuses. I put my name on a guarantee instead.
